Yeah, it's been a while since I had one of these up... Other things kept getting in the way. Basically this'll update whenever time allows I guess.

Anyway...

Faxanadu! A game that frequented Nintendo Power magazine back in the 80s quite a bit due to its huge quest and all its many secrets!

I remember playing this game as a kid trying to figure out where to go, what to do, etc, etc... Sadly, as a kid, I was impatient and not a big fan of RPG games back then, unlike my older brother.
I remember watching him play through this game and beating it, simply being an awe of how good he was as well as how good this game played and sounded.

Seriously, find the soundtrack on YouTube (or listen in the video below). There are some good tunes in this game.

I only finally did my own run through of this game about a year ago, and it was a fun experience. Though the hit detection can be a bit of a pain.

I remember this being a very grindy so-so title in my youth. My biggest issue, though, was probably the color palette. I swear, it felt like everything was just some shade of brown in Faxandu. Brown everywhere! I never really felt there was enough variation to it.

I think the issue was they were trying to convey you were going up inside a dying tree for most of the game, which made it feel repetitive. It's like if Super Mario Bros. had the same color palette behind every single level rather than mix it up with the underground and water levels.

I've literally never heard of this game. I feel my pre-1992 game knowledge is severely lacking.

It's a good game. It's a bit grindy in parts and can be puzzling in others, but that old school RPGs on the NES for you.

I know the cart doesn't go for much, and I think it MIGHT be on Virtual Console. Otherwise...there are emulators. *shhhh....*

Can't say I'm surprised I didn't know this one until now. I never was into console or computer rpgs until a few years ago (even though I've been playing p&p for what seems to be ages now). And it didn't get the lasting reputation of a Zelda for example.

But since I own a working NES, I might try and find a copy at some point. If I ever manage to finish Skyrim. And Mass Effect 1+2. And Fable 2. And Space Marines.

I was pretty much brought on NES back in the late 80s, so between me and my older brother, we were trying all kinds of games.

Though once the SNES showed up, I sadly forgot about the NES for a while because the SNES was the next step up in games.

By the way: That convention I mentioned in the PRITN comment section? Had a trader with a full box of NES games. Was very tempted to bag a few, but my gaming backlog is big enough as it is already.

Yes, but if the prices are good, I'd recommend still grabbing them while you can as NES games among others are continuing to go up in price and some are costing a small fortune now. O_o

Maybe so. I did make a great buy in the Bring and Buy section of the con though. Found and bought a big Ryomo Shimei figurine for 25 Schweizer Franken (which is around 27 US Dollars currently?).
Checked at home and found prices starting at 200 Dollars and going up to 300 Euro on Amazon and Ebay.

I have so been meaning to play this. I had a pretty good handle on the NES library when I was growing up, but this one slipped right by.

If you can find it, it's relatively cheap. Go for it!

Remember when we talked about there possibly another Metroid game some time ago?

Though what I've heard so far does not sound reassuring.

Too bad that Metroid game is one that doesn't even involve Samus...or Metroids...or anything remotely Metroid-like. Nintendo! You gone done screwed up again!
